Moringa oleifera, or drumstick tree, is a fast growing deciduous tree that belongs to the Moringaceae family. It is native to the Indian subcontinent, but is widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions around the world for its edible leaves, fruits and seeds, as well as for its medicinal properties.

Moringa can grow up to 10 metres tall, with a slender trunk and drooping branches. Its leaves are compound and bipinnate, with tiny leaflets that give them a feathery appearance. The flowers are white and fragrant and the long, slender green pods contain seeds that are surrounded by a fibrous, edible pulp.

The tree relies on a deep tap root that helps it obtain nutrients from deep underground, and can survive in arid regions. It requires warm climates and sunny conditions to thrive, and goes dormant below 18 C. It is resilient and able to tolerate drought and poor soil conditions as well as light frost.

 

 

Propagation and growing notes for Moringa oleifera:

• grows best in well drained sandy soil. Prefers slightly acid to neutral soil, pH between 6.0 and 7.5

• optimal germination happens with soil temperatures at or above 21C

• 7 – 14 days to germinate

• keep moist. The seedlings will not tolerate water logging

• require full sun for optimal growth and yield

• sow direct in spring or summer. Use deep pots if sowing into containers as the plant develops a deep taproot. Transplanting may be difficult.

• Flowers and pods are produced in 6 – 8 months
